Depression is absolutely horrible, and it is absolutely a terminal illness. It’s only made worse by the fact that far too many people seem to lack the understanding of how it works or how it causes people to suffer. People think that those with depression simply need to "cheer up" and "look on the bright side of things", and other such platitudes that do absolutely nothing to help.

 

depression in women can destroy lives. Depression can destroy relationships. Depression simply destroys, and anyone who thinks otherwise has never dealt with depression in a serious way. Unfortunately, that covers a large amount of people. Mental illness is not very well understood, and as such, it hasn’t been studied nearly as much as it should be. Which means we’re only just starting to really understand all the ways in which depression can wreck havoc on a person’s life.

 

For example, it’s been well known that women can become depressed after giving birth. Postpartum depression breaks your heart is a real thing, and it causes a huge number of problems for women. But those aren’t the only problems caused by depression that affect women more than men. A recently done study has found that women with depression are twice as likely to have heart problems. And not "heart problems" in a metaphorical sense, but actual, physical heart problems. depression and women are twice as likely to suffer from a heart attack, or to die from heart disease, as men with depression.

 

Unfortunately, studies have not yet determined why this is. There are some hypothesis, of course. One of the currently held thoughts is that the combination of hormonal and chemical imbalances caused by depression wreck more havoc on female hormone systems than on male hormone systems, but that’s as much a guess as anything. Studies are still being done, but thus far, they’re inconclusive.

 

This is why it’s incredibly important to treat your depression. There may not be a cure for depression, but there are things you can do to fight it. The proper combination of medications, therapy, diet, and exercise can help stave off the worst effects of depression. The exercise and diet can also help fight against the medical causes of heart problems, as well. So even though your depression may be telling you that nothing matters and nothing will ever change, don’t listen to it. That’s nothing but your sickness talking, and you can fight it.
